Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity
Apr. 01, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Every day, more and more families in South Metro Atlanta find themselves in a struggle to keep a decent roof over their heads. Caught in a poverty cycle of unpredictable rent increases, overcrowded conditions, or lack of access to land and affordable financing, these families live with a constant burden of uncertainty, stress, and fear. We believe that safe, decent and affordable shelter plays an absolutely critical role in helping families to create a new cycle, one filled with possibilities and progress. Affordable homeownership frees families and fosters the skills and confidence they need to invest in themselves and their communities. The outcomes can be long-lasting and life-changing. At Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH) we help low income families find opportunity, achieve stability, and improve their futures. We build stronger families and neighborhoods through homeowner education which includes financial literacy and by partnering with donors and volunteers to construct attractive, affordable homes and to repair existing homes. |

Learning to Read, Simply
Apr. 08, 2021 12:00 p.m.
By demonstrating the learning potential of the young child, the Souns early literacy program is revolutionizing the way children are introduced to the symbols of printed language. Souns places specifically designed and sequenced letters of our phonetic alphabet into the hands of the young child. The hand holds, plays with, and explores the letters. Since each letter is given only one label - the most common sound of that letter - the child slowly builds a base of letter-sound associations for the early stages of reading. Learning becomes incidental, natural - and fun. Souns is about early learning, and the hand is essential to this process. While highly valuable for typically-developing children, Souns is an especially powerful tool for special needs children with intellectual, physical and/or developmental disabilities for whom reading is often a challenge. Souns has the potential to break the poverty cycle: by helping children of low income families become ready for school, Souns can contribute to leveling the academic playing field. |

In late 1999, at the age of 33, Patrick Barnes awoke with some blood blisters in his mouth. Having survived Hodgkins Disease twice, he was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with the auto-immune disease, ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura). Pat and his wife, Tena, had just had their first child two months before he became sick. After his death, his family wanted to do something in Patrick's memory and knew that first and foremost, they wanted to say Thank You for the gifts nurses give their patients and families every day, just as they had experienced. Tena came up with the acronym, DAISY, standing for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem and the family filed papers to become a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. |

This program is one-of-a-kind. We have been bringing nations together since 1946. The program began with only 4 scholars, and now we are proud to say that we have more than 3,692 alumni from all over the world. The program’s purpose is to broaden the understanding of world peace through people and that is exactly what we’ve done. Join us to hear from Lorri Christopher & Katheryne Fields as they share about the last 75 years and the future of the program! |
